My Journey to Hewitt Woodworking

Early Years

A few of my little projects have been displayed on my page and I thought perhaps you would like to know a little more about me. My mom has called me Dwight since birth! I was born in Michigan. I lived and grew up on a dairy farm. When I turned 20, I joined the Air Force and served for 21 years. Upon retiring from the Air Force, I moved to Houston, Texas because I could never find a snow shovel that fit my hands very well. I found a job working in the medical field for the VA Medical Service working in the hospital pharmacy. After 18 years working in the VA Hospital System, I retired. I worked with a friend for a few months and then began my own construction company. For 16 years, I did it all from new builds, remodeling homes, and adding additions to existing houses. I also maintained and repaired commercial buildings.

Hewitt Woodworking

About 3 years ago, I decided to  sell my construction company. To stay active, I began working on smaller wood projects. I make a variety of clocks, decorative crosses, wood jewelry, shelving units for essential oils, picture frames, plaques and keepsake boxes. This has led to a new venture and Hewitt Woodworking was born.

In addition to my business, I enjoy helping others through ministry and have been known to build whatever is needed for children’s programs at church. I also help kids build pinewood derby cars for the Awana program at church. One ministry event that is special to my heart is Lifeline Global’s Returning Hearts Celebration. I volunteer my time to make hundreds of pinewood derby cars for children visiting their fathers in prison. I have a race track and take it and the cars to the event so the kids can race their incarcerated fathers. It’s a great time for both the kids and their dads and they get to take their car home as a keepsake.
